woah

switch 2 huh

the long awaited switch successor has finally been officially shown off! it got me thinking about what i think of this upcoming console, since i suppose i am more nintendo-adjacent and have a sort of opinion on their stuff. note: i'm not going to speak in any attempt to properly theorise or predict things, this is from the depths of my uninformed, selfish, last-century wants.

i got my og switch in 2020 after i finished high school, so i'm not in any rush to go and replace it. the only nintendo exclusives i care for really are animal crossing, pikmin, and splatoon (the online membership though...) and i doubt they'll launch any new game for any of these upon release or even a year or two from now anyways.

i got a bit curious about the launch titles lineup and had a look around. some theorise that, based mainly on some surprise appearances of games on the switch that would have previously been locked to another console1, one of the launch games could be a popular third-party title. depending on what that is, i could be swayed to purchase the switch 2 earlier, but at that point i'll have to take into account the price. if it hits anywhere near the price of a steam deck, i will simply pass on it until the next animal crossing title comes swinging.

although i like the look of the original switch with the blue and red, i don't really like how much of it is consumed by the black in the switch 2. maybe i'll crack and get a special edition console down the line, provided it's a bit fun-looking (i am jealous of anyone who has the animal crossing edition).

on a similar line, i had hoped that the switch 2 might be a bit more fun, mainly in the form of themes and customisation and a bit of whimsy (?) like the 3ds does, but based on the exterior as seen in the reveal, i'm not really sure how alive this wish can be. i don't really mind the current switch homescreen design, but i wish they had other options!

the way the joycons attach to the console are interesting. i just hope there's some kind of hidden physical lock to secure them in, or the magnets are real strong.

i don't really know what else to say. achievements could be cool and would be interesting to see how nintendo implements them, but i don't particular care whether they choose to or not. i'm glad they kept the headphone jack in an age where it's going extinct (bluetooth headphones i do not like you!!!!!!). didn't really like the rounded dock corners on the top but it is what it is. excited for more looks and reveals!

  1. still remember when they announced pentiment for switch i was like whatttt man. anyways, it's a wonderful time to start playing pentiment!!!!!!!!!!!!!
